July 21, 2010 // Grosse Pointe, MI // Grosse Pointe Farms-City finished another dominating run through the 11/12 Little League District 6 All Star Tournament with a solid 6-3 victory over rival Grosse Pointe Park in front of a capacity crowd at Defer Field in Grosse Pointe Park last Sunday. The win gave the 12-yr old Farms-City all star team its fourth consecutive District 6 Championship as they remained unbeaten in four years of district play with a perfect 25-0 record.

“This is a special group and I’m very proud of the boys for what they’ve accomplished these past four years”, said Farms-City manager Brian Demkowicz of the team’s dominating performance, “they’ve worked incredibly hard to get to this point and we are now focused on competing at the State tournament and hopefully beyond”. Farms-City advances to the State tournament in Gaylord starting Friday.

Farms-City began the district tournament by beating Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores and then proceeded to run the table, beating Lac St. Clair, Shelby, Detroit PAL, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores (semi final), and Grosse Pointe Park (final). The Farms-City boys were strong defensively, allowing an average of only 3 runs per game. Farms-City was also strong at the plate, outscoring their opponents by an average of 10 runs per game as they compiled a .550 batting average and .625 on-base percentage during the tournament.

In the championship game against Grosse Pointe Park, Farms-City controlled the game from the beginning, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. Farms-City added another run in the 5th before the Park managed to tie the game at 3-3 after a 2-run homer by O’Shea. Unfazed, Farms-City finally broke it open for good with 3 runs in the top of the 6th, as McMann, Leggat, Poplawski, Jakub, and Barry came through with clutch hits, including a 2-run triple by Jakub. In the bottom of the 6th Farms-City pitcher Gushee closed out the game with three consecutive strikeouts to seal the victory.

Gushee kept the Park batters off balance all day, recording 8 strikeouts and allowing only 4 hits. Farms-City provided strong run support, pounding 12 hits on the day, with key RBIs by Demkowicz, Jakub, Barry and Gushee. Defensively, strong performances were turned in by Ellis, McMahon, Becker, McWood, Montague, and Steinhauer, limiting the Park’s scoring opportunities. “This was a full team effort, with every player making significant contributions”, commented Demkowicz. Farms-City is also coached by Andy Montague and Art McWood.

Behind the fine pitching of Bobby Weiland the game was 3-1 going into the fifth inning. Woods-Shores threatened with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. However, A.J. Stevenson made a sliding catch in right and then doubled off the runner at 3rd. The next hitter had a base hit to center, but Evan Jeup threw the runner out at home to end the inning.
